I prefer manual link building to automated. When I link build, I'm looking very closely at the sites I want to be tied to - in terms of relevancy, site age, perceived value and PR.

In the long run, it's better to build link manually. But if you want something to work fast, automated link building should be fine as well.

According to me - both methods are good.
Automated link building give you the opportunity to submit to more sites your back link, but manual link building I think has better quality than automated, because in this case you can choose the more appropriate sites for your purpose.

Do you prefer manual link building than automated?
As per my knowledge, major difference between manual and automated submission is the proper selection of the site in which submission performed. Getting backlink from relevant site is much better than irrelevant and this can be done with manual submission only. I know manual submission is time consuming but finally gives sweet fruit.

Manual Link Building is the best practice in SEO. Though automated process is east and cost effective, there is no guarantee that will help for ever where as manual links building survive for long time.

Manual link building is safe and efficient. You can't trust on automated link building process.

Always go with the manual link building than automated, links done manually are last long than links done automatically. Besides Google knows what links are done automatically.

I also prefer manual submission, because when i go through the submissions manually, i also check the PR and reputation of that site. So, manual submission is more useful than automated.
