Hosting file hosting websites?
I read a discussion about file hosting service in another forum and it makes me curious about the hosting server. Do you think a dedicated server will be enough to host a file hosting website, or will you need to host it on your own server?

Dedicated server is not necessary, a good size VPS should do the job but it all depends on how much activity is going on. We recommend a small VPS to start as it grows you can grow your VPS resources until you need a Dedicated server. Taweem.

Yeah, you dont need expensive servers to for file hosting website. You dont need very good host specs to manage site a site, just much space. Shared hosting should do the job.

I hosted a file hosting site on a cheap shared server until it went under. Don't get a VPS or dedicated until you need to get it, if by the time you need it the site is not making enough money the site has failed.
On a less related note from personal experience, image hosting sties are a waste of time. To be done well they have to be done at a loss, they are inherently bandwidth drains.

If you are planning to launch website like rapidshare, megaupload or whatever, then make sure you give the first preferences to research and analyze on the amount of resource requirements. Also don't forget to read TOS....

Yes, VPS or Cloud will be good to start with. You can upgrade onto a Dedicated server as your website grows. As Cloud or VPS are cheaper as compared to Dedicated servers, so starting with VPS or Cloud will be a cost effective solution as you will not need to invest more funds initially.

To OP
IMO you should try cloud hosting services. It is useful because it will makes easier for you to scale your account up or down as you need to.

I don't think cloud hosting would be good for a file hosting site since they charge you for resources, and file hosting sites use a lot. Plus (not that you need it) but not many cloud providers are out of the US.

I would recommend a datacenter,
I myself sell VPS (UK, US, Zlin).. but since you want a host for filehosting site you should go for a datacenter.
