We tell customers that they *can* show up in the search engines as quickly as 24-48 hours, but left alone, it can also take as long as six months. Most of the time it isn't longer than that. One can possibly speed up the initial crawl, but after that, it's pretty much up to the search engines, I think, unless you PAY to be there (sponsored links).

There is nothing wrong with submitting your website to search engines, especially the three major ones. They will eventually crawl and index your website, but submitting it will make the process a bit faster.

If you have launched your website newly and you want to index faster, I will suggest one way. You should work to get only one back link, but from the page with PR more then 8 or 7. PR 5 can work for you but you need some more back links. You can try it. I am sure, it will work.

The best way to get indexed faster is to get quality back links. It doesn't matter if you're posting on a blog for links - but get links from various sources - from forum signatures, article marketing, and other ways.
I don't see a point of submiting your website to the search engines.
