Thanks for all your feedback guys.

My impression is that the backlink credited to our website will be seen by the search engines as coming from the URL shorteners (tinyurl.com, bit.ly, youtu.be, on.me.fb, etc.). I'm not sure about how much Pagerank you can gain from them.

But weblover is right. The ultimate goal is to create traffic. So, if shortened URLs bring traffic from the social media, then they have accomplished the purpose.

Really? How does this work exactly?

What I know is that Google now reads alerts in Twitter and updates in Facebook. But "reading"*the shortcut URLs in Twitter is something else. If it means extracting the target URL, then this is really something.
