Smashing Magazine - Your thoughts?
Hi
What does everybody think of SmashingMagazine.com ?
I have been a reader for almost a year now and in my opinion the content has decreased considerably lately in terms of quality. The posts just seem they're being posted to earn a profit and not to help our our industry learn more of the techniques and reasons behind what we do.
What's your thoughts? Are you a frequent reader? What's your opinion on my comment about quality degrading lately?
On another note; does anybody have the SmashingMagazine book? I'm half tempted to buy this, but not 100% sure on what to expect.

I'm a loyal visitor of SM aswell, and I have to agree with you on the quality of posts going down lately.
A while ago (can't specifically tell you how long) I visited SM to see awesome posts daily that I really WANTED to read 100%. Now there's just posts that I scan through quickly to see if there might anything interesting in them after all, which most of the time, is not the case.
It looks like the place is going downhill because they ran out of original topics to talk about. I see a lot of 'showcase' posts, which are nice but are not of the high quality that was there before.
I have the Smashing Book. If you want a completely new experience with things you've never read before: Don't buy it. The book is more of a really useful collection of information from the GOOD posts on SM. Things like usability tips, some theories on typography, colour, navigation and conversion strategies. I haven't read the whole thing, it's more of a book to have laying next to you when you work, so it's there to scan through when you want to.

I was never that big of a fan of SM. I really disliked how their style of posts were always Top # lists.. At least that's what they did for majority of the first few years.
I might go there once in awhile if someone links an interesting article but I've stopped relying on them to read daily.

I read Smashing a lot, and the quality is usually on the favorable side of the hit/miss ratio.
It does seem as though the quality has gone down a bit, especially with some of their network posts. I was just reading one today that basically said the same thing over and over for a few hundred words.

I used to read Smashing a lot - can't remember why I stopped. Maybe I saved myself some time, considering the remarks that their articles have gone downhill lately.

I have a deep respect for them and some of the great posts there. I'd agree though it's not something I'd read daily anymore. The "fill in" posts are more and more frequent, so it's not that easy to get a good "meaty" article anymore.
