You can do this with a Mod Rewrite to change the url to go to the original files (which would be the PHP file) but it can appear as any other file type.
I'm pretty sure you can change the php file extension in the php ini file too.

I can think of 2 ways that is done.
1. mod_rewrite as mentioned earlier
2. Setup Apache (through .htaccess or httpd.conf) to handle (xhtml, shm, wml etc.) as PHP files.
