I doubt it will stop being free. That was their main intent and they were doing fine with it being free.

Even if it goes to paid, there will always be MSSQL, text files, and then the older versions which will still be released.

To be honest, there will be no effect on the coding world by this, cos coders will just instantly move to a different system thats free. I mean, mySQL is pretty limited as it is anyways in that its so tempremental. I think hosts should be planning to provide a similar system (eg postgresql) along site mySQL.
