thats like saying you can build a house without power tools... yeah it can by done, but why?
with dreamweaver 8 - if you use the code view it's just the same as hand coding, but dw8 will close tags for you, end commands, etc... which saves a lot of time.
I don't see a downside to using it, even the design view is getting better (although it's still not perfect).

I agree with rosem - Using the design view is very obvious becuase it puts it but coded view whcih i use isnt at all. You type al the code in, it does just close tags, suggest tags.

Exactly!
Dreamweaver is a tool, much like a wrench to a plumber. If you don't know how to work on plumbing having all the wrenches in the world isn't going to help you do the job right.

I hand code in TextPad. It is a very lightweight program that has color highlighting and allows you to have multiple files, that you can Ctrl + Tab around, opened at a time.
I think that Dreamweaver is a good tool, but it is way too bulky for developers that can hand code and know exactly what they are doing. I don't need a program to close my tags for me - that would be a feature I would instantly turn off.
Its all about how you use your tools.

I recommend TextMate and Aptana. They are much better because they offer syntax highlighting and tooltips (code suggestions) and sometimes close tags. Aptana is open source and both have many cool things that are not ****ty, as is Dreamweaver. If you use the design view in Dreamweaver or GoLive, I fear for your life's usefulness to humanity... ok it's not quite that bad but it is a stupid method.

As of right now, I just use Dreamweaver to get it started, and then make the edits to the dreamweaver code to fit what I need.

That's the one thing that bugs me about Dreamweaver. I hate that it instantly and automatically closes my tags for me.

Big words for someone running a site fraught with coding errors.
