  Old  Help with AJAX

Hello, as my final project in my high school web design class I decided to do something very ambitious since I enjoyed the class so much. Sadly, the curriculum my school uses for their web design class sadly didn't have AJAX at all. So here goes. I am attempting to design a site centered around a large gallery of pictures.
example: www.onemanga.com/Naruto/0/01/
As you see on this page, everytime you click the picture or the next button, it leads to the next picture on a separate page. My question is, how would I attempt to do this dynamically through AJAX(I currently have wamp server up and running). This would minimize loading speed and hopefully earn me a better grade. Any solutions/help will be great, thank you very much.
